To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Sonic: The Hedgehog, Sega announced two new Sonic games at its San Diego Comic-Con party.
The first is Sonic Mania – a re-imagining of iconic levels from past Sonic games. Sonic Mania will be a 2D platformer with visuals and gameplay reminiscent of classic, Genesis/Mega Drive era entries in the series, and will feature zones and acts from Sonic: The Hedgehog, Sonic: The Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD, Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic: The Hedgehog 3.
Sonic Mania will be developed by Sega of America in collaboration with PadogaWest Games. Christian Whitehead and Headcannon, the people behind the well received remastered Sonic mobile ports, will also be assisting with development.
Here’s what Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka had to say about Sonic Mania:
“Sonic Mania was born out of our fans’ love of the classic Sonic 2D platform games. This type of collaboration is a first for Sega and we hope everyone will be both surprised and delighted by this title. Sonic Mania has been a passion project for the entire team and we look forward to sharing more details about it later this year. Having the game actually playable at the event itself tonight was testament to the dedication of the team behind it.”
The second game announced was Project Sonic:
Project Sonic will be an adventure game that will mix classic Sonic gameplay with modern versions, much like 2011’s Sonic Generations.
Sonic Mania will launch on PC, PS4 and Xbox One in Spring 2017. Project Sonic is aiming to launch on PC, PS4, Xbox One and NX in Holiday 2017.
