As we still await the first good video game to movie adaptation, the first trailer for the upcoming Assassin’s Creed movie has been released. It looks promising – with some neat action sequences, great setting and legitimately excellent acting talent in the form of Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Irons. It also has Justin Kerzel of Snowtown and Macbeth fame (the latter of which also starred Fassbender). Best of all the trailer had no bugs and didn’t crash, so it’s a huge step forward for the Assassin’s Creed franchise thus far.
The movie is also being produced by Ubisoft themselves, which means that it’s not been handed over to a Hollywood production studio with dollar sings in their eyes aiming to make a quick buck off the back of a big name video game franchise.
While the argument could be made that movies should be made by movie makers, not game makers, I’d counter that by saying that approach hasn’t produced a single good movie adaptation yet.
After seeing the trailer I think we can all agree on one thing – we’ve come a long way from Uwe Boll crapping out video game “movies” and challenging his critics to boxing matches.
