When you’re exploring the Commonwealth in Fallout 4 there are many dangers to keep an eye out for; Deathclaws, radiation, bugs – the usual. Getting hit by a car that comes crashing through your wall and almost kills you is fairly low on the watch out list while playing, but this is exactly what happened to Ben Rose, a resident of Irving, Texas on Sunday, December 6.

Rose was enjoying some extended time in the Commonwealth when the driver of a Hyundai Sonata came straight through his wall and hit him. In his own words “you play in a wasteland and then your apartment turns into a wasteland.”

The impact fractured his vertebra and sliced his Achillies tendon:

“Car versus people don’t really end up well. So I really thought it was over. Everybody asks were you walking in your parking lot? Or were you in your car? What do you mean she drove through your apartment?”

Rose’s injuries, though serious, could have been a lot worse. He credits the gaming chair he was sitting on with his survival:

“The chair saved me, without a doubt. That took the impact. It pushed me out of the way. It kept me from going under the car.”

Irving police believe the driver hit the accelerator instead of the brake when pulling out of a parking space at the apartment complex. She is uninsured, and though cited by the police, has left Rose with a heap of medical bills that he must pay for himself.

Friends of Rose have already set up a GoFundMe to help cover the costs, which has reached almost $5,000 as of writing. An update from Rose himself has expressed his gratitude at the donations he has received:

“Words cannot express my gratitude. So many amazing people out there making donations like this so close to Christmas. To those of you whom i know in person i will find a way to repay your love. To those amazing anonymous donations to a random guy in a time of need proves there is good people in this world still.”

If you’re able, go help the poor guy out. I know I said Fallout 4 was an immersive game, but I had no idea just how immersive…
