Focus Home Interactive have released a “concept teaser” for Dotnod Entertainment’s next game Vampyr, a role-playing game set in an early 20th century England thrown into chaos by a lethal outbreak of Spanish Flu. In the game you’ll play as Jonathan E. Reid, a military surgeon who becomes a vampire when he returns home from the Great War.
During the game players will explore 1918 London, interacting with a multitude of characters, each with their own identities, who will give you missions. Eventually though, you’ll have to decide who becomes your prey:
“All characters in the game are potential victims of your vampiric lust. Carefully study the habits of your next victim, his or her relationships with other characters, and set up your strategy to feed, unnoticed: seduce them, change their daily habits, or make sure they end up alone in a dark street.”
Feeding will not just keep you alive, but it will also unlock new vampiric powers for players to use. Exploration and seduction will only get you so far in Vampyr, and sometimes you’ll need to resort to combat, which aims to blend hard-hitting melee combat, ranged shooting, and the use of your supernatural vampiric abilities, fighting against other supernatural creatures and vampire hunters, who will use weapons, tools, and traps to hunt you down and destroy you.
In Vampyr your health and energy bars are one and the same; using your powers will give you an edge but also weaken you, meaning you’ll need to balance your health and ability use, or find a fresh supply of blood during a fight. Your choices will ultimately play an important role in shaping the fate of your character:
“As you cling to what remains of your humanity, your decisions will ultimately shape the fate of your hero while searching for answers in the coughing, foggy aftermath of the Spanish Flu.”
Vampyr is due for release in 2017 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
