Recently announced to an Internet frenzy at Sony’s E3 press conference, the Kickstarter campaign for Shenmue 3 has annihilated the Guinness World Record for the fastest video game project to raise $1million. Ys Net’s RPG revival raised that sum in a mere 1 hour and 42 minutes, besting the previous record holder Torment: Tides of Numenera by a wide margin, with the previous record standing at 6 hours and 5 minutes, set back in 2013.

Shenmue 3 has also become the second fastest Kickstarter to $1million overall, only being beaten by the Pebble Watch, which raised $1million in 46 minutes back in February.

It’s safe to say that Shenmue 3’s crowdfunding campaign is a runaway success. The game was funded in less than nine hours and, as of typing, has amassed $3.16million in a little under two and a half days.

As with any Kickstarter campaign that has surpassed its funding goal with time to spare, stretch goals have been announced. A few have already been achieved, with backers having unlocked Cinema Shorts of both previous Shenmue games, and subtitles in German, French, Spanish and Italian.
